Host / Volunteer

I've taken part in nearly 20 LAPs as a host, support driver and volunteer during the programs. This involvement has been extremely fulfilling for myself.

I've met some wonderful generous people amongst the volunteers both young and young at heart. I've met refugees and asylum seekers from all over the world and learnt so much from them. Through their love for family, friends, culture and country, I've developed a greater appreciation of those things for myself. I have a greater appreciation of the freedoms many of us take for granted like being able to vote in free and fair elections, and I've made some lifelong friends.

The experience can trigger mixed emotions. Feeling the participants’ genuine appreciation for what they experience in Australia balanced with what, for many of them, has been a traumatic experience during their journey here can be an exhausting roller coaster ride.

Whilst I'm humbled to receive the genuine thanks and appreciation from participants and other volunteers, I have received far more than I've given. It truly is confirmation that it is in giving that we receive.
