Buddies member Garry Bates recently lead a delegation to the Sunshine Coast Council to present a proposal for the Sunshine Coast to be declared a Refugee Welcome Zone. Others in the group were MDA representative Mitra Khakbaz and Buddies members Diana Woolley, Anne Jacobson, Linda Dennis, Bob Cullen and John Salter, most of whom were also representing other community groups.

Refugee support group makes presentation to council

A Refugee Welcome Zone is a Local Government Area which has made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community. The Refugee Welcome Zone initiative began in June 2002 as part of Refugee Week celebrations.
